This is something I both understand and don't understand.
I agree with a LOT of what you guys are saying here and honestly...I believe jealousy does play a part (big or small, that I can't tell) but it most certainly is something that is there.
What I believe is that society demands a lot- perhaps too much of a past Emmy. She set a very high bar during her teen years and even though I'm quite sure she's been living up to it, lots of people don't see it because she's changed and grown. Her achievements are no less- just different. However, people reproach this because it's too different for them to handle. Emmy's been in this business for a pretty long time and the majority of those years has been her preteen to teenage stage in life. Therefore, the haters feel acrimony towards her.
As to why so many feel resentment of such magnitude and strength...my only guess is this. I saw the question of why people like Lindsay Lohan are given much leeway- and Emmy here is not. I do not know if my guess is "right or wrong"- maybe it is neither. Again, I repeat that Emmy set a very high bar for herself- in skill and in reputation. People admired her so- there was something about her that set her apart from every other actor and actress in the industry. It was not for nothing she was called ¡°fresh-faced¡±. Some of the more mature material is being taken as evidence as a digression from that original path and for the worst nowadays. As much as people believe they understand her, I don¡¯t think they do- not completely, at the very least. Even if they did (and mark that I used past tense) that understanding did not evolve WITH Emmy. She¡¯s taking a completely different route from what Lindsay Lohan (someone who took a route all too familiar to the masses) and it¡¯s triggering ¡°the fear of the unknown or little known¡± in people. This, I believe, is why the former fans and now haters reply with such vehemence. They fear, they envy (perhaps ever so slightly), and they LONG for. I do not deny that I am envious of Emmy- of her determination, her ability to remain refined and tactful, and most of all: that self-assurance that she exudes everywhere and anytime. However, it¡¯s a matter of controlling this and such other sentiments- something that not everyone can do all the time. It¡¯s also something that people cast away with completely. It is the culmination of this and much of what has already been said that is instigating this response.
Therefore, I sympathize with both Emmy and somewhat with the haters/disappointed fans. What I do not find understandable and proper, though, is the total lack of decency that occurs when people beat her down in fandoms and in public because of this. It should not happen to anyone- no, not even Lindsay Lohan, simply because EVERYONE walks the wrong path, says the wrong words, and does the wrong things. As long as we continue to do so, we do not have the privilege of berating others. In this case, this applies to Emmy. It's a moral problem.
Sorry, that was a complete rant. In any case, I am with Emmy the whole way- as a fan. I say FAN (Fan meaning support and cheers, not one time up and when things look grim forever down).
